Statement: Space Shuttle Columbia

The tragic loss of seven brave astronauts and the Space Shuttle Columbia reminds us all of the dangers faced by those who venture into space. That knowledge, however, does little to lessen the shock and ease the sadness we feel at this dark moment. We will return to space because our destiny is to seek out answers that only the exploration of the universe can provide. But we will never forget the sacrifice of those who gave their lives in this bold quest over the years, among them the men and women of Apollo 1, Soyuz 1 and 11, the Challenger and now, Columbia.

We all pray for the family and friends of the heroes we've lost today. My thoughts, too, are with the people of Israel and the family of Col. Ilan Ramon. It was my honor, as President, to inform Prime Minister Barak in 1999 that an Israeli astronaut would be traveling on board an American shuttle, and I know that Col. Ramon's mission was a source of great pride for all the people of Israel. Today's tragedy strikes their hearts deeply, and they share with the American people a tremendous sense of grief. May all who mourn be consoled by our faith in God and in each other.
