Statement: Death of Christopher Reeve

As talented an actor as Christopher Reeve was, he will be best remembered for the qualities of the man behind the roles. He was a committed and effective spokesman for protection of the environment, funding for the arts and First Amendment rights. After the accident which nearly took his life in 1995, he showed the world the true meaning of courage and strength in the face of adversity.

There is no telling how many lives he changed through the power of his example and the persuasiveness of his advocacy. I will always be grateful for the work he did when I was president to increase funds for research on spinal cord injuries.

Hillary and I were proud to know him, and our prayers are with Dana and his family and many, many friends.
