Statement: Death of Peter Jennings

American journalism has lost an icon. Peter Jennings rose to the top of his profession through sheer determination, natural talent, intense curiosity, and hard work. He asked tough questions about hard issues, and pushed Americans to think about the problems of people beyond our borders in Bosnia, the Middle East, Africa, and elsewhere. His voice was calm and reassuring in crisis, urgent and passionate on human suffering, and always persistent in getting the story out. We, like millions of others, will miss his large presence and steady voice. Our prayers are with his family.
