Statement: President Clinton on the IRA's Decommissioning

I applaud today's announcement by General John de Chastelain of the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning (IICD) that all the arms believed to be in the possession IRA are now decommissioned. With this action, the IRA has delivered on its statement of July 28, 2005, in which it vowed to pursue its aims via exclusively political means and, more importantly, it has implemented a crucial dimension of the Good Friday Agreement. I hope that other paramilitary groups will now also cooperate with the IICD. It is incumbent upon the political leaders of Northern Ireland to seize upon this opportunity to make progress on other critical issues, including policing, paramilitary activity, and the re-establishment of the institutions of devolved governance in Northern Ireland.
