Statement: Death of Kim Dae-jung

Kim Dae-jung was a brave and visionary leader who moved South Korea beyond a serious economic crisis, paved a path to peace on the Korean peninsula, defended human rights globally and won a richly deserved nobel prize.

When we first met in 1992, he proudly told me that he represented the same new approach to politics that I did. After he became president, I was honored to work with him for reconciliation between North and South Korea. His “Sunshine Policy” offered more hope for lasting peace than at any time since the Korean War.

Hillary and I will miss our good friend Kim Dae-jung. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and the people of Korea.
