Statement from President Clinton and Secretary Clinton on the Passing of Zell Miller

Zell Miller lived an extraordinary life. From the house his mother built deep in Appalachia, to the U.S. Marines, to the Georgia governor’s office, to the U.S. Senate, and back home again, he never forgot his roots as he chased his dreams for his own life and for others. Hillary and I will always be grateful for his steadfast support in 1992, including one of the finest keynote speeches ever delivered at a national convention, and his friendship to Hillary from that campaign through their service together in the Senate. Zell’s legacy is embodied in Georgia’s HOPE Scholarships, which have sent 1.8 million young people to college and provided Pre-K education to 1.6 million more. It is fitting that Zell’s journey ended where it began, in Young Harris, Georgia, with his wonderful wife of 64 years and a loving family. He is home.
