Statement from President Clinton on the Passing of Joe Lowery

With the passing of Reverend Joseph Lowery, our country has lost a brave, visionary leader in the struggle for justice and a champion of its promise, still unrealized, of equality for all Americans. Throughout his long good life, Joe Lowery’s commitment to speaking truth to power never wavered, even in the hottest fires.  I will never forget walking with him across the Edmund Pettis Bridge in Selma on the 35th anniversary of Bloody Sunday.  Hillary and I are grateful for his friendship and for the knowledge that his legacy will live on through the Joseph & Evelyn Lowery Institute for Justice and Human Rights.  As he takes his well-earned rest, our thoughts are with his children, his church, his friends and loved ones, and the countless people whose lives he touched.
