Statement from President and Secretary Clinton on the Passing of Bob Dole

Bob Dole dedicated his entire life to serving the American people, from his heroism in World War II to the 35 years he spent in Congress.

Bob was passionate and spirited, sharp and funny.  He could fan the partisan fires and put them out when an honorable compromise was in reach.  I enjoyed our combat, and our cooperation even more.

His career was marked by the many bipartisan efforts he led, including his promotion of child development and food security in developing nations and here at home, his commitment to freedom for vulnerable people in conflict areas, and his lifelong support for our troops and wounded veterans.  I am proud of what we accomplished together, even after a tough campaign, honored to work with him to establish a fund to provide educational assistance to the children and spouses of those killed or disabled on 9/11, and privileged to visit with him in 2015 at the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas.

After all he gave in World War II, he didn’t have to give more.  But he did.  The power of that example should inspire people in public service today and for generations to come.

Hillary and I send our thoughts and prayers to Elizabeth, Robin, and his entire family.
