CGI 2024 Concludes with the Launch of 175 New Commitments on Climate, Health, Humanitarian Response, and more
President Clinton, Secretary Clinton, Chelsea Clinton, and world leaders gathered this week to discuss “What’s Working” and take action on our greatest global challenges including climate, health equity, gun violence, and more.
President Joseph R. Biden received this year’s Clinton Global Citizen Award for his extraordinary leadership, defense of democracy, and personal courage and compassion.
CGI 2024 brought together top leaders from business, philanthropy, government, and civil society including His Excellency Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Honorable Chief Advisor of Bangladesh; Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados; José Andrés, Founder and Chief Feeding Officer, World Central Kitchen; Matt Damon, Co-founder, Water.org & WaterEquity; Bill Gates, Co-Chair, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Jane Goodall, Primatologist and Anthropologist, Jane Goodall Institute; Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex; Yulia Navalnaya; Shonda Rhimes, Founder, Shondaland; Emma Walmsley, CEO, GSK; and more.

NEW YORK, NY – Today, President Bill Clinton, Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Clinton Foundation Vice Chair Chelsea Clinton concluded the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) 2024 Annual Meeting, announcing 175 new Commitments to Action that address climate resilience, global health equity, the protection of journalists, humanitarian crises, and other pressing global challenges.
Launched by President Clinton in 2005, CGI has built a community of doers who are taking action to make a tangible difference in people’s lives around the world. Highlights for the CGI 2024 Annual Meeting program included:
- President Clinton surprising President Biden with the Clinton Global Citizen Award on stage with First Lady Jill Biden, Secretary Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton;
- Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, confronting rapidly escalating problems in adolescent mental health and online harm and launching a new commitment to systematically change the technology, design and policies around social media.
- A one-on-one conversation between President Clinton and His Excellency Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Honorable Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, discussing the student-led movement for democracy in Bangladesh and the future of the youth movement.
- The launch of a new coalition to provide funding and technical resources to mutual aid groups in Sudan.
- A conversation with Secretary Clinton, Yulia Navalnaya, and Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya about threats to democracy and standing up to authoritarian regimes, following inspiring moments during the meeting with María Corina Machado, Suyén Barahona, Maria Ressa, Alsu Kurmasheva, Reem Al-Hajajra of Women of the Sun and Yael Admi of Women Wage Peace; Leymah Gbowee, and more;
- Secretary Clinton launching a new campaign to reach more families with information and tools to support early literacy, in partnership with the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy and the United Way of Pennsylvania;
- Critical climate awards from the CGI stage – including the inaugural Aviram Award for Climate Journalism to Susanne Rust of the L.A. Times; and the Postcode Lottery Group awarding $1.6 million to conservationist Enric Sala for his efforts to protect our oceans;
- A new Coalition for Mental Health Investment to bring more resources to bear on solutions to the global mental health crisis;
- Marking the 10th anniversary of their founding at CGI 2014, Climate Mayors launched a new commitment to build 168,000 EV chargers in disadvantaged communities; across the U.S.; and more.
When fully funded and implemented, the 175 new Commitments to Action launched at CGI 2024 will have a positive impact on the lives of more than 285 million people. Collectively, when fully implemented, these commitments will facilitate:
- More than $400 million dollars of funding to support historically excluded communities and businesses.
- More than 275,000 people with improved access to educational materials.
- More than 11.7 million people with access to health services.
- More than 435,000 people with access to maternal/newborn health services.
- More than $54 million dollars of goods distributed for humanitarian relief or disaster response.
- More than 7.3 million metric tons of CO2 equivalents reduced or avoided per year.

Since the CGI 2022 Annual Meeting:
- More than 480,000 people have received job training.
- More than 375,000 permanent, full-time jobs have been created.
- More than 8.8 million people are receiving access to primary care services.
- More than 300 million tons of CO2 equivalents were removed from the atmosphere through nature-based solutions.
- More than $34.8 million dollars have been provided to support historically excluded communities and businesses.
- More than 240 million pounds of food have been distributed.
