Three Years Later, Sudan is Still at War. Here’s How You Can Help on the Ground
Since conflict erupted in April 2023, 14 million people across Sudan have been displaced. 65 percent of the population – 35 million people – are in need of humanitarian assistance. Communities across Sudan are facing acute shortages of food, medical care, and basic services. This continues to be the largest humanitarian crisis in the world.
In the face of enormous challenges, Sudanese-led mutual aid groups and other local groups have emerged as the most effective responders on the ground delivering life-saving support in areas often beyond the reach of traditional aid systems.
At the forefront of supporting mutual aid is the Coalition of Funders for Mutual Aid in Sudan, a Commitment to Action launched at the Clinton Global Initiative 2024 Annual Meeting. Convened by the Center for Disaster Philanthropy and partners, Funders for Mutual Aid in Sudan initially committed $6.5 million in funding and technical resources to support mutual aid groups and locally led approaches across Sudan.
Momentum behind the coalition of funders grew significantly. At CGI 2025 one year later, the funding ceiling was raised to $16.5 million, reflecting a broader shift among global donors toward trusting and resourcing local actors. To date, an additional $1.75 million has been mobilized following the 2025 meeting, further accelerating support to communities on the front lines. This funding reaches the local responders in Sudan, who are the best-placed to decide how those funds are used to meet the most urgent needs, which include health, addressing the famine and mass malnutrition, and providing protective services such as support for survivors of gender-based violence.
As the war enters its third year, members of the Clinton Global Initiative community are mobilizing resources, expertise, and partnerships to support locally led humanitarian response efforts across the country. See below for information about commitments and ways you can help.
