Visit to Kenya will highlight Clinton Foundation work and impact in economic growth and development, climate change, empowerment of women & girls, and global health and conservation
NEW YORK – On Friday, May 1; Saturday, May 2; and Sunday, May 3, President Clinton and Chelsea Clinton will visit the sites of several Clinton Foundation projects in Kenya that are improving the lives of thousands of people across the country. These visits are part of a larger trip by President Clinton and Chelsea Clinton that includes Tanzania, Liberia, and Morocco. A pool report from yesterday’s stops in Tanzania can be found here. CHAI Zinc/ORS visit

Chelsea Clinton will seeing the work of the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) in educating families about use of Zinc/ORS in treating diarrhea. Diarrhea is the second leading killer of children, responsible for more than 700,000 deaths globally each year. Zinc & Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) can prevent over 90 percent of diarrhea-related deaths and cost less than US $0.50 per child; yet less than one percent of children receive the full recommended treatment. CHAI works in Kenya to increase access to and use of Zinc/ORS. CHAI partners with the government and local stakeholders to execute an ambitious, large-scale approach that breaks the market trap by simultaneously building demand for Zinc/ORS, and ensuring widespread availability in public and private facilities, particularly in rural areas.

No Ceilings Conversation

President Clinton and Chelsea Clinton will convene a conversation of No Ceilings: the Full Participation Project, about the participation of women and girls globally. This will be held at a school that is part of the CHARGE Initiative – a commitment announced at the 2014 CGI Annual Meeting by Secretary Clinton. CHARGE – Collaborative for Harnessing Ambition and Resources for Girls’ Education – is a collaboration of more than 30 companies, civil society organizations, multilaterals and governments to improve learning and leadership opportunities for young women and girls. This collective effort has committed over $600 million dollars to reach 14 million girls over five years.

CGI Commitment visit: Wings to Fly

President Clinton and Chelsea Clinton will be addressing participants of a women and girls leadership training center that is part of Wings to Fly. The Wings to Fly program, part of the commitment “Investing in Kenyan Youth and Women,” was launched in 2010 by Equity Bank Limited and the MasterCard Foundation. The commitment aims to build the financial capacity and entrepreneurship of youth and women throughout the country. The program expands access to financial services to young people, ensures gender equity, and provides transformative leadership training. Since it was launched, Wings to Fly has provided 10,000 secondary students with training, with 98 percent of those students graduating secondary school and 94 percent going on to college.

Starkey Hearing Foundation conducts hearing missions in the United States and around the globe to bring the gift of hearing to those who would otherwise live in the isolation of a silent world. As a member of the Clinton Global Initiative, Starkey Hearing Foundation has pledged to fit more than one million hearing aids to people in need this decade.

CCI System for Land-based Emissions Estimation in Kenya (SLEEK) visit

President Clinton and Chelsea Clinton will see a data mapping project on the effects of climate change, part of the work of the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI). CCI worked in partnership with the government of Kenya to develop the national scale System for Land‐based Emissions Estimation in Kenya (SLEEK) program, which will provide data that can be used to improve transparency as well as coordination between national governments across the land sector. This allows for better policies and sustainable management of Kenya’s natural resources. CCI is also creating a cutting-edge tool that will draw data from five key areas, land cover change, climate, crops, soils, and forests, bringing it together to improve access to information and allow for better decisions to be made. The collaborative effort will help ensure improved data collection and management, enhance communication for partners working in similar areas, and will provide policy makers and landholders the means to make informed decisions about their land.

President Clinton and Chelsea Clinton will visit the Partnership to Save Africa’s Elephants, a CGI Commitment to Action launched in 2013 by Save the Elephants and other partners to prevent further elephant poaching by directly targeting the chief drivers of poaching. This commitment has facilitated anti-poaching enforcement in Africa, supported efforts to crack down on international ivory markets, and raise awareness of the impact and risks of ivory sales to the survival of the African elephant. A key component of the innovative technology Save the Elephants created is a tracking system which uses GPS collars and technology to monitor elephants’ hourly movements and uploads it into a system which can be accessed anywhere with internet access. This way they can monitor if the elephant is moving too fast, which could indicate they are being chased by a poacher, or if they have stopped moving which could indicate injury or death. This technology has given Save the Elephants a major advance in terms of combating poaching.
