Press Release: Celebration to Mark Presidential Libraries Stamp

The William J. Clinton Presidential Center will hold a special ceremony on August 4, 2005 to mark the release of a new postage stamp, commemorating Presidential Libraries. The inaugural class of the Clinton School will be in Little Rock for the special event.

“The U.S Postal Service is proud to honor the importance of Presidential Libraries and is encouraging Americans to visit these national treasures,” said Postmaster General John E. Potter.

The new stamp recognizes the libraries’ role in preserving and providing access to historical documents, helping people understand the responsibilities of the executive office and to learn about our former Presidents as children and their years before the White House.

“Presidential Libraries give Americans access to their history and to the choices that shaped our nation,” President Clinton said at the groundbreaking for his own library in 2001. “This Library will house the documents that tell the story of the last years of the 20th Century and the dawn of a new millennium.”

The U.S. Postal Service is releasing the stamp to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Presidential Libraries Act of 1955, which enabled Presidents to donate their materials to the federal government for preservation and public access.

The new stamp was designed by Howard E. Paine, and the type was produced in calligraphy by Julian Waters.

Similar celebrations will take place that day at the nation’s 11 other Presidential Libraries and Museums.
