Press Release: Kazakhstan Government Signs Agreement to Join HIV/AIDS Initiative Procurement Consortium

Today, Former President Bill Clinton and the Minister of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mr. Erbolat Dossayev, signed an MOU to have Kazakhstan enter into the Clinton Foundation’s Procurement Consortium, a group of more than 40 countries that are currently receiving antiretroviral drugs and HIV/AIDS diagnostic equipment at the Clinton Foundation’s reduced prices. The agreement will enable Kazakhstan to purchase high-quality AIDS medicines and diagnostics at the lowest available prices in the developing world.

Since 2002, the Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative has been assisting countries in implementing large-scale, integrated care, treatment and prevention programs and in procuring drugs and diagnostic equipment at reduced prices. Currently, over 40 nations in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America have access to drugs and diagnostic testing equipment at the Clinton Foundation’s low prices. The prices for ARVs negotiated by the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative are 50% to 90% lower than the lowest price otherwise available in most settings, and cover individual formulations and two- and three-drug fixed dose combinations that have been pre-qualified by the World Health Organization and/or the US Food and Drug Administration. The prices for diagnostic tests include machines, training, reagents and maintenance and are up to 80% cheaper than otherwise available on the market.

The Government of Kazakhstan has been a regional leader in HIV/AIDS training, research, and laboratory work and this agreement will enable Kazakhstan to more rapidly scale up its national care and treatment program for people living with HIV. Speaking in Almaty, President Clinton said “I am delighted that Kazakhstan has entered my Foundation’s procurement consortium for the purchase of high quality antiretroviral medicines and testing equipment. Kazakhstan is at a crucial point in its fight against HIV/AIDS and this agreement will make the investments of the Ministry of Health more cost effective, and will enable the government to reach more HIV+ people and save more lives.”
