Press Release: Low-Cost AIDS Drugs for Malawi and Benin

Benin and Malawi to Access Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative Pricing for AIDS Drugs and Diagnostics.

The Governments of Benin and Malawi have joined the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative Procurement Consortium, which enables them to access drastically reduced pricing for key AIDS medicines and diagnostic tests. The partnerships will boost the ambitious national treatment programs that have been launched in both countries.

In Benin, though the adult prevalence rate of 2% is relatively low for the region, the Government is undertaking aggressive efforts to combat the disease and provide high-quality care and treatment. It aims to put 6,000 people living with HIV/AIDS on treatment by 2005. Malawi faces a much larger epidemic, with an estimated adult prevalence of 14.2%. There, the Government aims to treat 80,000 by 2006, under a national program that provides antiretroviral treatment at no charge.

By partnering with the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Governments of Benin and Malawi will be able to purchase high-quality antiretroviral drugs and diagnostic tests at the lowest available prices in the developing world and, therefore, treat many more patients as quickly as possible.
