Press Release: President Clinton and Clinton Global Initiative University Attendees Collaborate with the University of Texas at Austin in Community Service Project
President Clinton joined by Mayor Winn of Austin; Matthew McConaughey; Co-Chairs of “The Project,” a leading community service organization at The University of Texas at Austin; and over 500 participants to clean up Rosewood Park and Recreation CenterAustin, TX — President Bill Clinton joined over 500 Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) attendees and University of Texas at Austin students, faculty and staff members in a traditional “Day of Service” project at the Rosewood Park and recreation Center in East Austin.
Since the university's volunteer project began, it has involved more than 16,000 volunteers and contributed to an estimated 53,000 hours of service in seven Austin neighborhoods. The project is coordinated by the university's Volunteer and Service Learning Center, and cooperates with Keep Austin Beautiful.
“It's appropriate that we conclude this weekend focused on service by turning words in action,” President Clinton said. “I'm pleased that The Project would invite us to be here today, to give myself and so many UT students the opportunity to do our part to clean up Rosewood Park.”
The project concludes the two-day CGI U conference where over 1,000 students representing 318 schools, 60 countries, and all 50 states attended, along with nearly 100 university administrators and almost 70 leaders of National Youth Organizations. Over 1700 CGI U Commitments have been made by students, universities and national youth organizations to impact pressing global issues.
CGI U builds on the successful model of the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting, which celebrates its fifth anniversary this year, to engage college students and administrators to make commitments to address global issues with practical, innovative solutions.
