Statement: Death of Constance Baker Motley
I was saddened to hear of the passing of Judge Constance Baker Motley. Judge Motley was a trailblazer in American law and Americans for generations to come will live in a stronger and more just country because of her work. Whether as a lawyer on the legal team that successfully argued Brown v. Board of Education, the first African American woman elected to the New York State Senate, Manhattan Borough president, or the first African American woman appointed to the federal court, Judge Motley devoted her life and career to ensuring that all Americans received equal justice under law. She is an example to all of us who value civil rights and her legacy will live on.
