Statement: Death of Eli Segal

We are deeply saddened by the death of Eli Segal and profoundly grateful for his life. Eli was our friend for more than thirty-five years. He was a brilliant, passionate, good man who gave everything he had to the people and causes he loved: his family, his business, his country and his political and civic endeavors.

Eli's leadership was critical in the 1992 election victory. He helped select the campaign's main personnel, then served as its chief of staff during the general election. His amazing talent for creating new enterprises led the stunning successes of Americorps and the Welfare to Work Partnership, in which Eli signed up twenty-thousand companies that hired more than one million people off welfare, giving them and their children the dignity of work and the hope of a brighter future. By the time I left office more than 200,000 young Americans had done a year or more of community service in Americorps, improving the lives of millions of their fellow citizens. Those young people and their work, through community groups like Eli's beloved CityYear, are the lasting legacy of Eli's lifetime of patriotic citizenship. Phyllis, his wonderful children and grandchildren, and his legion of loyal friends are the legacy of his lifetime of love and living for others.

We are especially grateful for the last visit we shared with Eli and his family just a few days ago. He ended his life as he lived it, with strength and dignity, fire in his eyes and love in his heart.
