Statement: Death of Senator Moynihan

Along with millions of people across New York, America and the globe, I grieve at the loss of Daniel Patrick Moynihan. This son of Hell's Kitchen is tonight at Heaven's gate, and we are left not only with wonderful memories of his wit and wisdom, but also with a legacy of service unparalleled in recent times. Longshoreman, sailor, author and academic, diplomat and Senator, Pat Moynihan lived an extraordinarily energetic life devoted to enriching the state of our nation and advancing the condition of our world.

He was a prophet, with a heart as big as his mind, and his greatness of intellect and spirit infused every cause he undertook. I am especially grateful for his many contributions to the work of my presidency. Our public life will be inspired and informed by his words and example for generations to come. We offer our prayers to his wonderful wife, Liz and their family.
