Statement: Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Today we honor the life and legacy of one of America's greatest citizens, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We also honor his beloved wife, Coretta Scott King, and the contribution she continues to make to the life of our nation. Dr. King gave his life so that the promise of freedom, equality and opportunity could ring true in the lives of all Americans. While we have made great progress since his assassination 28 years ago, that promise of freedom, equality and opportunity is still not fully met. Too many of our fellow Americans live elbows together but hearts apart. The best way we can honor Dr. King is by living as he lived, by serving by trying to make the promise of freedom, equality and opportunity real, by taking action in our lives to create the more just and united America that he dreamed of.
