Statement by President Clinton on the Fifth Anniversary of the 2010 Earthquake in Haiti

I join with people in Haiti and around the world in remembering the lives lost five years ago today in the devastating earthquake. On this anniversary, we should be thankful for the progress made and strong in our commitment to support Haitians as they continue their march toward a more prosperous future. 

The efforts of the Haitian people and their partners in the international community are yielding promising results, including four consecutive years of positive GDP growth, rising apparel and agricultural exports, and increasing tourist numbers. But there is still much more to be done to widen the circle of opportunity and create the capacity for long-term development that relies less on foreign aid and more on the talent, enterprise, and resilience of the Haitian people. 

At the Clinton Foundation, we are working to advance this mission by promoting sustainable investment and supporting entrepreneurs, women business owners, and smallholder farmers who are revitalizing and diversifying the Haitian economy. CGI members of the Haiti Action Network have made significant contributions, totaling in about 500 million dollars, in health, education, agriculture, tourism, and infrastructure. And they are committed to doing more.

The greatest tribute we can pay to those who tragically lost their lives on January 12, 2010 is to stand with the people of Haiti until their bright future is fulfilled.
