APPROACH AND METHODOLOGY
Denis O'Brien has assembled a group of experts including engineers, steel workers, artists, architects and cultural experts to manage this cultural, sensitive project in cooperation with the Mayor of Port au Prince. It is being managed on the ground with maximum involvement of Haitian workers and including Haitian artists who are recreating the steel work. Consultation about the ongoing management and sustainability of the market is also key.
IMPLEMENTATION, TIMELINE, AND DELIVERABLES
The ambition is to complete the construction for use as a live market within 12 months of commencement, by March 2011.
The Iron Market, built in the 1890s, was the commercial heart of Port au Prince for over 100 years. During the 1970s, it was a key destination for visitors on passing cruise liners, providing income for artisans and merchants. Already damaged by fire five years ago, the remaining structure was greatly damaged on 12 January 2010, leaving a gaping hole in the heart of the city. This destruction has left traders with losses of stock and has forced merchants to sell goods from the side of the street.
