TUNE IN TO CGI U 2020 "AT HOME" on SATURDAY, APRIL 18!

Statement on CGI University 2020

The Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) is a year-round leadership development program, where students collaborate and learn from a network of alumni and leaders from business, government, academia, and civil society. Students develop their own Commitments to Action — new, specific, and measurable projects to address pressing challenges in their communities — and the year-round curriculum culminates with CGI U’s annual meeting.

Each year, this meeting brings together hundreds of young leaders from all parts of the world. Unfortunately, given developments regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, public health experts are advising against a physical convening of this kind in April. A cornerstone of the Clinton Foundation's mission is to improve public health, and we are committed to the safety and health of all CGI U community members.

As such, we have made the following changes to the CGI U program for 2020:

  • The scheduled CGI U meeting at the University of Edinburgh in April 2020 has been postponed to spring 2021.
  • CGI U is developing a meaningful virtual experience for this year’s participants during the scheduled days next month.
  • Students will receive additional assistance as they collaborate and develop their Commitments to Action, and will be encouraged to address the ongoing public health situation involving COVID-19.
  • Students from this year’s class will have the opportunity to attend next year’s meeting.

While we are disappointed that next month’s student meeting will not proceed as planned, we are determined to continue expanding our year-round curriculum and virtual networking opportunities, and look forward to continuing our partnership with the University of Edinburgh to host our first international meeting in 2021.

Building on the successful model of the Clinton Global Initiative, President Bill Clinton launched the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) in 2007 to engage the next generation of leaders on college campuses around the world. Each year, we challenge students to make Commitments to Action: new, specific, and measurable initiatives that address pressing challenges.

Through our program, students participate in leadership development, mentorship, skills training, and partnership building, with the experience culminating in the CGI U Annual Meeting, where commitment-makers across the world come together to learn how to turn their ideas into action. Since 2007, more than 7,000 commitments have been made and $3M in funding has been awarded to commitment-makers through CGI U.
