De Beers - Mwadui 'Community Diamond' Partnership
In 2006, the De Beers Family of Companies (FoC) committed to provide the necessary resources and skills to generate practical solutions to address the socio-economic, health, technical, and regulatory issues arising from the unmanaged, informal, and small scale diamond industry of Tanzania.
As of June 2008, the MCDP project has moved into the stage of participatory project planning. Monthly open forum community meetings are held with the eight villages involved in the project and through these monthly forums, the communities have received education in mining and land law and their rights. Each village has also elected two representatives, who together form the MCDP Community Liaison Team. This group is able to represent the requirements and priorities of their communities within the project.
