Laureate will launch this international scholarship program as part of a broad initiative to further educational opportunities to deserving teachers around the world. The goal in giving 1,000 scholarships is to make a positive difference, locally and on a global scale, in the lives of students and families through access to higher education. A full scholarship has life-changing value to someone who would otherwise not have the financial resources to pursue higher education.
This is an international scholarship initiative focused on training teachers. When a nation increases the number of teachers with advanced degrees, greater numbers of students and families are empowered to effect positive change, making communities stronger.
To implement this program, Laureate will:
1. Fund allocation at each participating university
2. Convene an expert panel in each country to determine the criteria for awarding the scholarship
3. Build awareness through PR and ads
4. Ensure the enrollment of qualified students with scholarship grants.
Each of the partner schools will set aside funds to implement this scholarship program.
This commitment is an international initiative to provide 1,000 full scholarships to highly deserving teachers to help them earn their master's degree in education. Those selected will be known as Riley Scholars, in honor of Richard W. Riley, former U.S. Secretary of Education during the Clinton Administration and a champion for making higher education accessible to those in need.
Richard W. Riley served as United States Secretary of Education from 1993 to 2001. He previously served two terms as governor of the state of South Carolina. Mr. Riley was named one of the 20th century's 'Ten Best Cabinet Members' by Time Magazine. During his tenure as Secretary of Education, Mr. Riley spearheaded initiatives to improve academic standards and to expand college grant and loan programs.
