United for Oxygen: Oxygen & Pulse Oximetry in Ethiopia

Commitment by

GE Foundation, Global Development Incubator, Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Masimo Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

In 2016, a coalition of companies, nonprofit organizations, foundations, United Nations and multilateral agencies—including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Masimo, PATH, Philips, Pneumonia Innovations Team, Save the Children, UNICEF, USAID and more—committed to form United for Oxygen, a first-of-its-kind partnership to support the Government of Ethiopia’s Medical Oxygen and Pulse Oximetry Scale Up Road Map to expand access to oxygen for women and children in Ethiopia. Every year, lack of access to oxygen contributes to the deaths of more than 120,000 children under five and thousands of women in pregnancy and childbirth globally. In Ethiopia alone, better access to oxygen could reduce the estimated 11,000 women who die in pregnancy and childbirth, the 60,000 babies who die in the first month of life and the 30,000 children who die from pneumonia each year. United for Oxygen will address this challenge by increasing the availability of pulse oximetry screening and oxygen therapy technologies in health centers and hospitals, by training local staff in the use of the new technologies, by establishing sustainable financing solutions for the procurement, installation and maintenance of the new equipment, and by prioritizing pulse oximetry and oxygen access in the policies and guidelines of the Ethiopian health authorities and of the major international development agencies. Following 2017, the partnership will promote and extend the Ethiopian oxygen access model to other countries with high levels of maternal, newborn and child deaths throughout South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
