APPROACH AND METHODOLOGY
The MSP framework consists of three main categories, with four focus areas in each:
1) My Health
-Eat Healthy
-Get Active
-Reduce Stress
-Quit Tobacco
2) My Planet
-Enjoy Nature
-Save Energy
-Save Water
-Reduce Waste
3) My Life
-Learn New Skills
-Make Quality Time
-Manage My Money
-Help Others
Each of these focus areas allow people to select an MSP goal that is personal. The unique characteristics of MSP allow it to be easily tailored to meet individual company and cultural needs. For example, a company may feature all three MSP categories, or some organizations may focus solely on the My Planet MSP goals.
The program will provide tips on how to drive MSP along multiple fronts, from keeping the spirit alive at the grassroots level to the regional ambassadors selected to serve as MSP leaders. It will also provide tips on building sustained employee engagement and a curriculum to educate and activate employees.
IMPLEMENTATION, TIMELINE, AND DELIVERABLES
In 2011, Walmart will develop a toolkit with the MSP branding and curriculum and make it available to any organization through CGI. As Walmart saw the success of its pilot program, and the early results of MSP, we are excited to provide the MSP license and program to other organizations. The organizations will have the ability to engage their employees by implementing the program to help them live more sustainably in their daily lives. We will measure the success of the program by the number of organizations involved and the number of MSPs committed through CGI.
Now more than ever, Walmart understands that it has a responsibility and an opportunity to make a difference with sustainability. Sustainability has become a part of how we do business, and our employees have responded by demonstrating a passion for making a similar commitment to sustainability in their own lives. Our employees have asked for tools and resources to help them quit smoking, eat healthier, live greener, be more community-minded, manage their personal finances better and learn new skills. That's why we developed the MSP program.
Walmart believes that personal sustainability is something that all people around the world - not just our employees - should have the opportunity to make a part of their daily lives. We want to encourage other organizations to take advantage of what we've learned. Through MSP, employees of companies and organizations around the world will have the ability to integrate sustainability into their daily lives. MSP has the potential to help employers further engage their employees and enhance productivity and retention, while also reducing absenteeism and operational costs. Happier, healthier employees have the potential to foster greater trust among customers and clients, and can lead to improved organizational reputation.
We have seen that by participating in MSP, our employees have the ability to voluntarily improve their health, decrease their environmental footprint and live better lives overall. MSP is still in the early stages at Walmart, but the potential long-term impact has already been evident. Employees around the world have committed to quit smoking, recycle, reduce water and energy consumption, get active in their community and become more physically active. Imagine the possibilities if Walmart's more than 2 million employees worldwide - who collectively serve 200 million customers each week - were to each make one small change for the better. That's the power and potential of MSP. By offering MSP to other companies, we believe they can also potentially see healthier and more engaged employees living a sustainable life.
