Meeting Topics
Jobs, Jobs, Jobs: Generating Employment for the 21st Century
Approximately 205 million people are unemployed worldwide, and another 1.5 billion are "vulnerable" workers who are under- or informally-employed. As these workers seek stable employment in the wake of the global recession, they face a radically changing economic landscape. New technologies are enabling information to move nearly instantaneously across the planet, decoupling job growth from familiar geographic constraints. As a result, some of the world's strongest economic growth is occurring in the developing world, which has become a major driver of the production and consumption of global goods and services. In the developing and developed world alike, the promise of economic opportunity has stimulated an unprecedented migration of the world's population to major urban centers. Yet this process often concentrates poverty, as many workers who lack the skills needed in a rapidly evolving job market find themselves living in marginalized communities. At the 2011 Annual Meeting, CGI will highlight effective workforce training programs, showcase innovative government incentives that catalyze inclusive job growth, and examine market-leading business developments that can sustainably increase profits, productivity, and prosperity around the world.
Sustainable Consumption: Ensuring Long-term Prosperity on a Finite Planet
We are consuming beyond our means in ways that imperil both economic and ecological systems around the world. Our production patterns and consumption choices have unintentionally endangered the environment, undermined human rights, and exacerbated cycles of poverty. But we are also experiencing the beginning of a significant shift in values; instead of simply demanding more goods at lower prices, individuals and organizations are analyzing the effect that their consumption decisions have on other communities. Furthermore, corporations have also seen that reducing packaging, waste, water, and energy use can improve profitability, while sustainable product design and local sourcing can create new marketing opportunities and entice new customers. At the 2011 Annual Meeting, members will explore how, by redefining consumption, organizations can quickly respond to the realities of impending resource constraints and instability while ensuring economic growth.
Girls and Women: Scaling What Works
The international community has for the most part embraced the overwhelmingly positive results of engaging girls and women in all levels and sectors of development work. Practitioners have identified and tested strategies that successfully get girls and women into school, involve them in formal economies, and give them rights over their life decisions. Yet millions of females still do not have access to critical resources and services. A continued focus on girls and women at the Annual Meeting in 2011 will allow CGI members to take a deeper look at what is working in girls and women's empowerment and highlight areas where more resources could make a significant impact. In particular, CGI will highlight organizations and partnerships that have piloted projects or taken ideas to scale with measurable, positive results. Additionally, CGI will reinforce and promote the ideas and innovations coming directly from girls and women in the developing world, who seldom have the platform that CGI provides.
